L-theanine is an amino acid that is an important bioactive constituent of green tea. Green tea has a long tradition of use in Asian medicine to promote relaxation. It is widely used to treat low mood, anxiety, and stress. When taken, it does produce a calming effect within 30 minutes at therapeutic dosages. This calming effect can last for 8 to 10 hours in many cases.

L-theanine, when taken before bed, can be helpful with disruptive sleep or trouble falling asleep. Studies have shown it can increase sleep duration and REM sleep. It can safely be paired with melatonin.

L-theanine has been found to reduce stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that when taking L-theanine over a 4-week period, there was a noted reduction of stress-related symptoms. It does work to elevate serotonin, dopamine, and GABA (a naturally occurring chemical messenger in your brain linked to creating a calming effect). Although this does appear promising, it is important to note that stress is different for everyone and results may be limited in levels of severe stress.

It is important to also speak with your health care provider before starting a new supplement regimen. At Statera, our providers are a great resource for all of your supplement questions.
