Optimizing Health Before Conception and During Pregnancy

Pregnancy is an amazing time in a woman’s life. Through these 40 weeks, the body is undergoing many changes as the baby is developing. Maintaining health through pregnancy often starts before conception.

Our bodies crave proper nutrition, before, during and after pregnancy. Fueling our bodies with foods high in protein and fiber and low in simple carbohydrates will keep us full and provide sustained energy throughout the day. Women planning a pregnancy should also consume plenty of healthy fats, and maintain this throughout the pregnancy. Supplementing with a probiotic, vitamin D, vitamin B12 and folate will help with fetal development. Consuming half of our body weight in ounces of water daily will maintain hydration, help with digestion and is essential to form the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby. Starting a home exercise program prior to pregnancy will increase energy levels and strengthen muscles. Maintaining activity throughout the pregnancy will keep you strong and ready to give birth. Many physical activities are safe to continue throughout the pregnancy.
