Why is it Important to have a Primary Care Provider?

What is primary care?

Primary care encompasses health promotion, disease prevention, health maintenance, patient

education, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses. The main role of primary

care is to provide comprehensive and continuous care to patients. Providers who specialize in

primary care focus on the care of the whole person and these providers include physicians,

physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. Family practice providers care for your whole

family, from newborns to the elderly of any age or gender. They are knowledgeable in a wide

variety of areas, including most common conditions and diseases.

Why is it important to have a primary care provider?

Many adults do not have primary care providers until they have conditions that require a

medical provider, however, it is beneficial to have a provider before these needs arise to help

prevent them. These providers take a proactive approach to care that utilizes preventative

measures and promoting self-care. Primary care providers save patients money, optimize

health, and address both sickness and health for the patient. If you need specialists in addition

to a primary care provider, your provider can help coordinate care and communication between

the different specialists.

What should someone look for in a primary care provider?

People should look for a primary care provider they feel comfortable with and are able to

openly communicate with. They should feel confident in the care they are receiving from the

provider. The presence of trust between the patient and provider is important to maintain a

strong relationship and get the most from primary care. Since the primary care provider is the

first entry into the health care system patients should feel comfortable to discuss any signs or

symptoms they may be experiencing or any questions they may have. Each practitioner has a

unique way of interacting and caring for patients and so individuals may need to look to find

one they are happy and comfortable with on improving their health and wellbeing. Finding a

primary care provider that is the right fit for you and your family is an important step to take in

your family’s overall health and wellbeing.
