How does caffeine intake (particularly coffee) affect your metabolism or ability (or lack thereof) to lose weight successfully?

Coffee can boost metabolism for a short amount of time after drinking it leading to additional calories burned, which can lead to weight loss. It can also give you more energy that may be used to exercise a bit longer or more intensely than you would without it, which can also lead to more calories burned leading to weight loss over a period of time. However, you can become tolerant over time, meaning that caffeine will no longer affect your body in the same way. 

 

Caffeine can also hinder your ability to lose weight if you already have high cortisol, the stress hormone, levels. Studies have shown that caffeine intake can raise levels of cortisol similar to an acute stress experience. Drinking caffeinated drinks daily can increase chronic cortisol levels and chronically high cortisol has been linked to obesity. The end result of chronically high cortisol levels can lead to an increase in insulin levels, your blood sugar dropping and cravings for sweet, high fat and salty foods.

 

Caffeine can both support or hinder weight loss ability depending on the person. If you feel more agitated, stressed out or anxious when drinking coffee, it may be helpful to your weight loss goals to eliminate caffeine from your daily habits or at least reduce it to one cup of a caffeinated beverage per day. But if you’re someone who tolerates caffeine well, it can be a tool to support your weight loss goals along with healthy nutrition and exercise.
