March Article : Mental Health Counseling
Mental health counseling, provided by licensed practitioners, is an integral part of Statera’s holistic approach to integrative health and wellness. Mental health counseling is a strength based and wellness approach that addresses the mental health and emotional needs of clients. Depression, anxiety, grief and loss, relational challenges, communication problems, trauma, and problem-solving skills are only some of the areas addressed in the counseling process. Mental health counseling differentiates itself as a profession from psychology, psychiatry, marriage and family therapy, and social work because of its strength based focus on wellness. Jane Meyer, Ph.D., who is one of the past presidents of the American Counseling Association (ACA) informs that counseling is best understood as a profession within a “wellness paradigm rather than the illness-oriented medical model” because wellness best reflects the goals of the profession.
The term wellness was defined in 1987 by Archer, Prober and Gage who wrote that it is “the process and state of a quest for maximum human functioning that involves the body, mind and spirit”. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines wellness as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Relational health was added to the wellness definition by WHO and this aspect of health is another important focus in mental health counseling. Wellness, therefore, is the primary paradigm that informs the mental health practitioners at Statera who considers the physical, relational, emotional, and spiritual health of their clients.
Dr. Jane Meyer argues that a holistic approach to counseling is necessary because “Emotions are sophysically and biologically based in the body that, as counselors, we can’t afford not to look at the whole person.” Psychiatrist, Bessel van der Kolk, MD, agrees with Dr. Meyer in relationship to how traumatic events impact human beings. As one of the leading researchers and practitioners in the field of traumatology, van der Kolk explains that “Trauma affects the entire human organism— body, mind, and brain.”
Mental health counseling’s foundational principles are strength based, holistic, preventative, collaborative and educational. The licensed mental health counseling provided at Statera is greatly impacted by a wellness philosophy because the counselor assumes that emotions, thoughts and the psychological aspect of a human being cannot be separated from the relational, physical and spiritual health of a client. Our licensed mental health clinicians will blend a variety of evidence-based approaches in the counseling field with other health professionals at Statera who share the same holistic commitment to integral wellness.
